In the Summer months, the treshnish isles become a haven for breeding sea birds. Lunga has a large colony of the wonderful Puffin along with a large number of Razorbills and Black Guillemots. You will also see Northern Fulmar, Kittiwake, Shag and you may be lucky and see a Great Skua.

Itinerary

We will leave from Lochaline at 11am and head through the Sound of Mull past Old Ardtornish Castle. On our way past, we will take in a pair of White Tailed Sea Eagles before motoring down the Sound to Tobermory. A brief toilet stop at Tobermory and a pick up and we pass the lighthouse and look for a second pair of White Tailed Eagles.

As we pass out of the Sound, Fraser will be keeping an Eagle eye out for Whales and Dolphins as we head around the North coast of Mull and towards the Treshnish Isles. We will then head to Staffa to see the incredible Geology before motoring back to Lunga, anchoring up and heading on to shore using our small tender.

You will have around 2.5 hours on Lunga to explore, take photos or just enjoy the Puffins. The trip is responsibly undertaken by a marine biologist and bird specialist/professional photographer. We welcome questions as we go and always offer advice on taking better photos if you would like it.

Lunga

After our code of conduct briefing, we get onto Lunga using a small tender boat. You will need a reasonable level of mobility to get into and out of the tender and then across the rocky shore onto the main part of the Island. After that, it’s a short, but steep climb onto the first ledge where the Puffins live. You can then make your way up further towards where the Razorbills, Guillemots and larger sea birds nest along a narrow cliff top path.

The boat

Island Panther is a comfortable cabin RIB expertly piloted by experienced skippers. We are generally inside while underway and will stop if we spot something exciting. Being wildlife and not a zoo, we can’t guarantee spotting things, but always do our best. We have tea and coffee on board and some spare pairs of binoculars and some of Peter’s fab bird books.

Cancellation

We always reserve the right to cancel the trip due to bad weather. Please also note, we need at least 5 passengers for the trip to run. If we do have to cancel, we will usually offer you another day if we possibly can.
